Of children, parents and violence
When home is not a safe place - children in the shadow of domestic violence
Children not only experience domestic violence as silent witnesses - they are often affected themselves and bear the psychological scars for the rest of their lives. The science communication project "On Children, Parents and Violence" focuses on their perspective and breaks through the previously predominant adult viewpoint. The result is an impressive book that uses graphic short stories and expert contributions to shed light on the experiences of children in families characterised by violence. At the centre are three fictionalised child characters whose stories are based on real biographical interviews with adult victims. Embedded in international research findings, the impressively illustrated episodes open up an emotional approach to an often overlooked topic - and invite more understanding and compassion. At the book premiere, you can expect text readings, insights into the illustrations and a discussion with the project manager Prof. Dr Anja Pannewitz and the comic artist Aike Arndt. Together, they will also talk about the creation of the book, the challenges of the project - and how social and political discourses shape the view of children as victims of domestic violence.
- Anja Pannewitz is a professor of social work sciences at HTWK Leipzig and researches domestic violence.
- Aike Arndt is a comic artist, illustrator, graphic recorder and course leader for comic and drawing workshops.
