30 years of extraordinary commitment to HTWK Leipzig:
Gerhard Bremmer is honoured with the Jakob Leupold Medal
Prof. Gerhard Bremmer will be honoured for his 30 years of commitment with the award of the Jakob Leupold Medal of HTWK Leipzig on 11 October 2021 as part of the matriculation ceremony in the Gewandhaus! Gerhard Bremmer was brought to HTWK Leipzig in 1992 to contribute his experience after the political change and to actively support the development of the teaching and research area of architecture. Gerhard Bremmer took on special responsibility during this period of political upheaval at the university. Thanks to his professional and political expertise, he was able to provide competent support in all questions of teaching conception and organisation and took on additional courses in design and building theory over many semesters.
He took his 60th birthday as an opportunity to establish a professionally relevant and permanent institution at the university by donating an annual prize endowed with 1,500 euros (originally 3000 DM in 1996), which has since been awarded every year by a jury in a competitive process for the best work by architecture students. This prize has been in existence for 25 years and is highly valued by both students and teaching staff, as it is an important contribution to the debate on architectural topics and is accompanied by a public exhibition. Prof. Bremmer still has close ties to the university, as he regularly comes to Leipzig in person for the jury meetings and award ceremonies.
Gerhard Bremmer is a busy man, always interested in interdisciplinary working methods, which is also reflected in his professional career. He supported the Faculty of Architecture and Social Sciences during the restructuring process in 2013/14 by voting in favour of the merger at the request of the then Rector, Prof. Lieckfeldt, and providing expert reasons for this. The Faculty is delighted to honour its member Prof. Gerhard Bremmer and wishes him many good years of continued cooperation and exchange!
Prof. Gerhard Bremmer was born on 13 June 1936 in Bad Schwalbach, Hesse. He studied architecture, technical media, art history, philosophy and literature in Vienna and Berlin. At the beginning of the 1960s, he was a research assistant at the Technical University of Berlin. In the mid-1960s, he returned to his native Hesse and became a partner in the Friedberg office of Heinrich Hohmann Architekten, which was later renamed Bremmer, Lorenz, Frielinghaus Planungsgesellschaft (BLFP) - where he worked as a freelance architect until 2001. In addition to his designs and buildings, ranging from airports to sports facilities, his work is rounded off by numerous publications. Gerhard Bremmer has been a member of the Association of German Architects since 1970, where he soon became involved on the board of the BDA Hessen. He was first elected President of the Hesse Chamber of Architects in 1984, a position he held for five terms until 2004. He was remarkably committed to the interests of the profession and, with his optimism and confidence, succeeded in realising even the seemingly impossible. Prof Bremmer has been involved in the development of the architecture department at HTWK Leipzig in a variety of ways from 1992 to the present day.
